Garden is ready to go! March 26th Food and Exercise Journal

by Alison on March 26, 2010

My second garden bed is in and the weather is warming up, I plan to put some hardy stuff in the ground this weekend!  We are still a ways from our spring frost date so I am waiting on anything delicate but I definitely can’t wait to get some stuff into the ground.  Last summer I had one raised bed and it wasn’t really enough for me so this year I put in a second, I hope to grow most of our veggies for the summer.  Drake thinks the taste of organic fertilizer is just grand and I have found him in my beds eating dirt a few times grrrrrrrr! I have the layouts of my beds all done and I have all the seeds and seedlings that I need (I think).   Drake and Luna both seem really interested in the garden, used to be when Luna was a puppy she would dig up a carrot every day to eat, I am hoping she has out grown this and that my little “fence” keeps her out.  It seems to discourage her but not Drake, he is just incorrigible!  This year I am growing 4 kinds of heirloom tomatoes, green beans, eggplants, zucchini, swiss chard, kale, lettuce, red peppers, trying jalepeños again (fingers crossed), napa cabbage, celery, cucumbers, onions, shallots, garlic, carrots, parsnips, brussels sprouts and a bunch of winter squash as well as all sorts of herbs, should be fun, oh and potatoes (can’t forget the potatoes).  All my seeds were sourced from organic sources and all my fertilizer, dirt, compost etc is also organic. I am hoping for a bumper crop of organic veggies!

We got a late start today and opted for making waffles from Kodiak flapjack mix, they are awesome whole grain pancake and waffle mix without a bunch of gross added ingredients, and tasty as well, still feels lazy vs making my own though :p We took the dogs for a long long walk and despite predictions of rain we were all quite hot and had to peel off layers, hooray for gardening tomorrow.  For lunch I made chicken souvlaki “sandwiches” which are always tasty if somewhat messy.  I spent part of the afternoon finishing off the second garden bed and prepping it for planting in the next couple of days and weeks.  I’m sort of nervous about planting before my 5k and being sore but the weather is supposed to be gorgeous tomorrow and no so much so the rest of the week.  For dinner I heated up the leftover thai pork in peanut sauce which we had with leftover brown rice.  I was feeling a bit veggie deprived so we had two veggie sides snow peas and green beans.  I finished off dinner with a pudding and I’m getting ready to watch Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution, the first episode was cool so I’m hoping it continues.

Holy garden! You’ve got a lot going in, Alison! That’s wonderful! Your beds are so pretty…I’m a bit ashamed of mine now! Haha! Drake and Luna are adorable!! Is this their first blog appearance? I haven’t seen them before 🙂 Lily LOVES to chew on my fence…it doesn’t deter her at all!

LOL I love your raised beds, they look great. I like that mine are fairly high, (call me lazy) and somewhat narrow so that I can easily reach everything. This is the second time I’ve done raised beds so I knew just what I wanted.
Drake and Luna have snuck into weigh in pics before but this is the first time that they posed for me to get them in their own right. I put sticks in the beds yesterday to mark out each square foot and that seems to have kept Drake out of the bed that I left them in last night, I think I’ll leave them a bit longer.

P.S. Do you have a recipe for that Chicken Souvlaki? I didn’t see it in the recipes tab 🙁
